Welcome to the Haida Gwaii Community Electricity Plan

The Council of the Haida Nation and BC Hydro commissioned the development of a Community Electricity Plan (CEP) for Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands (hereafter referred to as Haida Gwaii). The Sheltair Group, a Vancouver-based consulting firm, in association with Cooley & Associates, Inc. of Victoria, is conducting the work. The CEP is expected to be complete by the end of 2007. Opportunities for public involvement and input will take place over the spring and summer of 2007.

A CEP addresses both the supply and the use of electricity. It identifies ways to conserve electricity and use it efficiently, and recommends options for the supply of electricity. The plan for the islands will be developed with input from the island community and will include residents’ expressed values and goals. The CEP includes both a technical program and a public involvement program.

On December 6, 2006, The Sheltair Group kicked off the CEP process with a workshop for Working Group members, at the Skidegate Homemakers Society hall. Members of the Working Group are elected officials from the various island communities, and representatives from the Haida Hereditary Chiefs, BC Hydro and the Council of the Haida Nation. A representative of the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources sits on the Working Group ex-officio.

The Sheltair Group is now developing a public involvement program for island residents. Public meetings were held in late February and early March, 2007. Check this website for summary notes of the public sessions, which will be posted as soon as they become available.
